Mungrup Stud provided the first stakes winner of the season when Wink And A Nod charged home to capture the LR Belmont Newmarket (1200m) on August 8.

It was the McFlirt mare’s first in black-type ranks and improved her record to 9 wins from 22 starts for $271,000 in prizemoney.  She will be given the chance to double up at Listed level in the Idyllic Prince Stakes (1300m) on August 22.

Wink And A Nod settled well back before firing a broadside in the straight to defeat Cool Trade convincingly.  “She’s probably one of my favourites in the stable,” apprentice Lucy Warwick said.  “She travelled beautifully in the race and the more ground the better.”

Her trainer father Justin Warwick has the Ascot summer carnival in mind for the born-again mare who was hampered by hoof problems earlier in her career.  “I would like her to be there at that time of the year with the right rating.  It’s only August so we don’t need to decide until the end of this preparation.”

Wink And A Nod is the third stakes winner by McFlirt (NZ).  The 21 year-old sire son of Kaapstad was pensioned by Mungrup Stud in 2014.
