Wednesday’s Vale Jeremy Hayes Hcp (1100m) at Ascot honoured one of Western Australia’s leading breeders who died last week.
Jeremy Hayes was a WATC committeeman and bred numerous winners at Karnup Stud in Serpentine.
His best galloper was the lightly-framed black filly Lost World who ranked among Australia’s best three year-olds in 1981-82. She was trained by Len Morton and won the Grandstand Cup and Pinjarra Guineas, both in track-record time, before completing a feature hat-trick in the Pinjarra Millionaire Sires’ Stakes.
The Jungle Boy filly then travelled to Sydney for a career high victory in the G2 Surround Stakes at Warwick Farm.
Hayes scaled down his bloodstock interests after Karnup Stud’s dispersal sale in 1992 but was still involved with winners like Prosaic (Bianconi) at Northam in 2010.
