Sunspeed stallion Egomaniac was represented by his first winner on Sunday.
Contego (4g Egomaniac – Contende by Buriton) is a homebred for Henry James and he scored a narrow victory in the Wilson Shearing Plate (1200m) at Lock on the Eyre Peninsula. The gelding was ridden by Tamara Zanker and was having his first start for Streaky Bay trainer Tony Haddy.
James stood Egomaniac at Finniss in South Australia where he sired 10 foals in two seasons at stud.
Egomaniac (Kenvain) was bred at Mungrup Stud and won 4 of his first 5 starts for trainer Trevor Andrews in the spring of 2006. “His sire Kenvain was a sprinter but a few of his progeny got over ground like Moonee Valley Cup winner Rain Gauge,” Andrews said. “He looked like a miler with a fair bit of leg when I got him as a yearling. He really covered the ground and was a very agile sort of horse.”
Sent to Melbourne, Egomaniac finished fourth in the G3 Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield prompting connections to pay an $82,500 late-entry fee for the 2006 Victoria Derby.
The Perth colt was never in the hunt behind Efficient at Flemington but his owners were amply rewarded when Hong Kong came calling with an offer of $500,000. Renamed Leading Ahead, he won first-up at Sha Tin but was repatriated to Australia after just four starts for trainer Tony Cruz.
