Slik Sam gave racegoers a glimpse of his raw ability with a brilliant debut win at Belmont on Wednesday.

The Foreplay youngster flew home to nail Keeper’s Tale (Scandal Keeper) and Proconi (Nicconi) in the Bonanza 2YO (1000m).  “I don’t know where the bottom is with this bloke,” trainer Simon Miller said.  “He’s a very nice horse and just keeps improving.

“Today’s race was too short but I wanted him to learn how to chase.  They scooted along in front and it mapped out perfectly.  He wasn’t ready earlier this season and he’s going to fill out into lovely three year-old.”

Slik Sam’s arrival is a fillip for Foreplay in advance of his initial book at Geisel Park Stud this year.  A stakes winning sprinter by Danehill, he will stand for a $4,500 (plus gst) service fee at Myalup.

Slik Sam’s dam Sophia Town (Johannesburg) also won on debut – at Bendigo in March 2010 – for Woodside Park.  She’s a half-sister to Adamantium (G3 VRC Standish) from the family of Sky Cuddle (G1 VRC Emirates).

Millendon breeders Frank and Margaret Fry bought Sophia Town from Woodside Park in 2014.  Slik Sam was her foal at foot and he was retained after failing to reach a $40,000 reserve at the 2015 Perth Magic Millions.

Sophia Town was also positive to Written Tycoon and the Frys catalogued that foal – a filly – for this year’s Magic Millions under their Jingle Holdings banner.  She made $100,000 to Dan Morton.

The Swan Valley couple and the other part-owners are looking forward to an exciting future with Slik Sam.  “Simon will give him another start on June 25 and then turn him out for the summer carnival,” Frank Fry said.  “He was a stocky yearling and has really muscled up this prep.”

Sophia Town has a prized nomination to Australia’s in-form sire Written Tycoon for 2016.  “She slipped last year and we’ve got a free return,” Fry explained.  “As for next year, who knows.  She’s got a real good one by Foreplay so why not go back?”
