WA-bred stayer Boom Time has dealt punters a body-blow with a $51 upset in the G1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).

Boom Time (6h Flying Spur – Bit of a Ride by Snippets) began his black-type career for owner-breeder Kim Loxton with a Listed victory in the 2015 Melvista Stakes at Ascot before transferring to Lindsay Park in Victoria.

Sidelined for almost 12 months with a tendon injury, he returned to complete a hat-trick at Flemington (2) and Moonee Valley late last year prior to another Listed victory in the Mornington Cup Prelude (2000m) at Caulfield in February.

Trainer David Hayes purchased Boom Time from Loxton after the autumn carnivals.  “What a great result and special thoughts with Kim who’s a great friend of mine.  He’s overseas at the moment and we will be having a celebration drink at some stage.

“I just can’t believe it.  Miracles do happen!”

Boom Time defeated a world-class field in the $3.51 million first-leg of the spring cups’ double.  They chased tearaway leader Sir Isaac Newton (GB) with the Sunspeed stayer poised to pounce at the top of the straight.

Loxton operates Ferrari Racing & Breeding in Serpentine and he bought Wyong winner Bit of a Ride in March 2002.  Sent to Neville Parnham, she paid her way with more wins at Ascot, Belmont, Pinjarra and Kalgoorlie before her close relation Black Caviar sent the pedigree through the roof.

“My wife Cheryl made me send Bit of a Ride to Flying Spur hoping we would get a Golden Slipper winner,” Loxton recalled earlier this year.  “But we got a stayer instead.”

The Loxtons also race last month’s LR Boulder Cup winner Already Famous (Viscount).

After foaling Boom Time, Bit of a Ride was mated with their former Exceed And Excel sire Pitleco – without luck – before he was transferred to Bindi Cheers in NSW last year.

Now an 18 year-old, Bit of a Ride delivered a colt by All American in August.

Boom Time completed a feature double for the Sunspeed breed at Caulfield following G3 Ethereal Stakes winner Pinot (Pierro) who was bred and sold by Keith Biggs to trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Other recent WA-bred stakes winners in the Eastern States include Vega Magic, Black Heart Bart, Silent Sedition, Sheidel, Jukebox, Ducimus, He Or She, Star Exhibit & Daysee Doom.
