Trainer Dan Morton labelled Another Chino a ‘proper stayer in the making’ as an autumn 3yo and he looked the part winning the LR Luckygray Stakes (1800m) at Ascot on Saturday.
His Alwyn Park-based sire Maschino has already made an impact this season with Marocchino in the G3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) to maintain a buoyant 18% Stakes-performers to winners strike-rate.
Another Chino (Photo / Western Racepix) took advantage of a slow tempo in the early stages to camp outside the leader Bad Wolf (So You Think). He took over at the furlong and then held on gamely to fend off the challenges of Pompey (Xtravagent) and Queen Alina (Mahuta).
“I left it to Brad (Parnham) where to put him in the run although I didn’t really want him to be reverse-parked,” Morton said. “Rolling forward was the winning move and he’s taking the usual route to the (G2) Perth Cup (2400m) through the (LR) Scahill Stakes (2100m) in a fortnight.”
Another Chino is one of six black-type winners by Maschino having annexed the LR Melvista Stakes and LR John Roberts Stakes in March before finishing second to Awesome John in the G2 WATC Derby (2400m).

“He was a raw 3yo and today was his third run back after a good winter spell,” Morton added. “He doesn’t hold a heap of condition but seems to be getting away with it.”
Another Chino is a homebred for Maschino’s owners Jim and Trish Anderson and there’s a fair degree of stamina through his dam Apheta (Galileo). Second dam Storm Fille was a daughter of G1 Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch. She was raced by John Roberts and was placed behind Honor Lap (NZ) in the 2002 editions of the WA Derby and WA Oaks.
“Everything worked out well compared to the Northam Cup last month,” Parnham said. “That was a horror show. He’s tough so I let him flow. He travelled really well and got the job done.”
Maschino (Encosta de Lago) stands for a $9,900 (inc GST) with John Andrew at Alwyn Park in Serpentine.
