It’s been four years since the Mungrup Stud Dispersal Sale and rarely a week goes by without a winner emerging from the 157 lots catalogued by the Great Southern nursery in August 2020.
Mungrup Stud’s Gray Williamson kept a few mares and among them was Dirty Vegas (Lucky Owners) who was empty after missing to resident sire Oratorio in October 2019. Nevertheless, Mungrup did sell her I’m All The Talk yearling colt to Forest View Farm for $25,000 and her Oratorio 2yo colt to Lex Piper for $42,500.
The yearling is now known as Filthy Habits and a Belmont double on August 3 and 17 sent his earnings to $315,461 boosted by Westspeed Bonuses of $88,700.
The 2yo is named Vevinsky and he completed a magic month for the family with a front-running victory in the $100,000 Broome Cup (2200m) on Saturday.
He tracked grey galloper Hezazeb (Zebedee) passing the winning post the first time and was then set alight by Kristo Sardelic to go six lengths clear down the back straight.
Vevinsky (Photo / Western Racepix) showed no signs of stopping and hit the line more than three lengths ahead of Acermetric (Blackfriars) and Gambler’s Gold (War Chant).
“I’m probably the longest-serving trainer in Broome and winning the Cup is a dream come true,” an emotional Kelvin Moore said at the presentation.
“I’ve watched the best trainers like Harold Parnham and Phil Grantham win it over the years. They were great mentors although they probably didn’t realise the effect they had on me.”
Vevinsky was previously prepared by David Harrison to win at Pinjarra and Ascot but had to travel all the way to Esperance for a third in January. Moore took over and revitalized the rising 6yo to wins in the Derby Cup (1800m) and Kimberley Cup (2020m) before claiming the feature race of the season on the Pearl Coast.
His dam Dirty Vegas still resides in the Great Southern and her A Lot (USA) colt made $35,000 at this year’s Perth Magic Millions to the bid of Justin Warwick who also races Filthy Habits.
The Broome Cup result was a great start to this season for Mungrup after finishing on top of the WA Breeders black-type table in 2023-24 with Bustler (G1 Railway Stakes), A Lot Of Good Men (G2 WA Derby), Hot Zed (G3 Colonel Reeves Stakes) and Holy Enchantment (LR Pinjarra Cup).
