Following an unplaced finish in the Group 1 Queen of the Turf Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday, Peter and Annie Walsh announced the retirement and proposed sale of their star mare Amelia’s Jewel.

Amelia’s Jewel (5m Siyouni – Bumbasina by Canford Cliffs) boasts a French and Irish lineage being conceived to southern-hemisphere time at Haras de Bonneval in Normandy and arriving out here in utero with her dam who had been black-type placed at Killarney and Cork.

Retained by Amelia Park, Amelia’s Jewel bows out with a career card of 10 wins from 24 starts for prizemoney totalling $4,124,800.  She won the G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at two and G1 Northerly Stakes (1800m) at three for Ascot trainer Simon Miller.

Miller took her on the road to win at Group 2 level at Moonee Valley and Flemington during the 2023 Melbourne spring carnival before transferring to Annabel Nesham and Rob Archibald for another Group 2 in the Guy Walter Stakes (1400m) at Randwick last month.

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch was surprised to learn of Amelia’s Jewel’s addition to the Chairman’s Sale.  “She’s something of a collector’s item and is particularly desirable because people wouldn’t have thought they would ever have the chance to invest in her.

“Peter and Annie are typically breed to race owners and opportunities for us to trade stock for them have been relatively limited.  Amelia’s Jewel was an extraordinarily talented racemare and I think her record doesn’t do justice to her ability.”

Peter Walsh thanked those who supported and offered their guidance.  “Words cannot express the gratitude we feel towards everyone who has come along with us.  They say it takes a village and this is truly fitting with Amelia’s Jewel.

“To Louis Le Metayer of Astute Bloodstock and Peter O’Brien from Segenhoe Stud, thank you for getting us started on this journey.  And to Simon, Kelly (Kinninmont) and Siobhan (O’Donnell) as well as Patrick Carbery in Perth and Annabel and Rob in Sydney.”

Amelia Park retains a link with the family with future breeding prospects like a Siyouni full-sister to Amelia’s Jewel.  She was foaled last September and Bumbasina has a PPT to Zoustar.
