Brazen Butcher made amends for missing the money on debut at Ascot earlier this month with a brilliant breakthrough in the Hygain Release Maiden (1200m) at Pinjarra on Wednesday.
Getting a start from second emergency, the Snippetson youngster jumped straight to the front for Jarrad Noske and then accelerated to a five-length lead in the straight to score with something in reserve from Without Remorse (Pierro) and Buon Amici (Long Leaf).
Brazen Butcher had been confidently supported from $11 into $4.20 first-up on April 2 but didn’t fire in the race won by Elite Beau (Brazen Beau). He had looked an early runner when purchased by Esperance trainer Josh Brown for $6,500 as a yearling from Scenic Lodge at an Inglis Online Sale in February 2024.
Twelve months earlier, Brown had targeted another Scenic Lodge-bred colt by its former sire Snippetson. He was named Snipers Son and was placed on debut in the 2023 Crystal Slipper Stakes (1000m) at Ascot.
“Brazen Butcher was a bargain and, after he was broken-in, I sent him up to Trevor Andrews,” Brown said. “He’s named after James Somerville who is a butcher in Esperance. His son Cameron and my fiancée Chelsi are also part-owners. He pulled up really well after Pinjarra and now we’re keeping fingers crossed he gets a run in the Karrakatta.”
At acceptances on Easter Monday, Brazen Butcher was first emergency for the G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) this Saturday. A win would complete a very successful month for Scenic Lodge graduates after Machine Gun Gracie’s classic sweep in the G3 WA Oaks and G2 WA Derby.
Brazen Butcher is a three-quarter brother to Snippets Land (G3 BRC Sprint) and his dam Brazen Angel (Brazen Beau) is now owned by Pinjarra breeder Robbie Gardiner. She has a filly foal by Gardiner’s Randwick Listed winner Choistar (Choisir).
Brown bought another bargain by Snippetson when paying Greenfields Lodge $20,000 for his final-crop colt out of Hello Again (Encosta de Lago) at the Perth Magic Millions Sale in February. His dam is an unraced half-sister to Debellatio (G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes) and he’s one of 10 yearlings Brown has on the books in Esperance.
