Maschino (Encosta de Lago) made immense inroads this season to finish second on the WA Sires’ premiership table thanks to dual classic-winner Machine Gun Gracie and a $5 million Kia Quokka jackpot with Jokers Grin.

But it wasn’t only the headline horses that made a career-best season possible for Maschino.  The Alwyn Park resident sired the winners of over 70 races from minimal numbers compared to our other leading stallions in 2024-25.

Among them is his promising sprinter-miler Asphalt who completed a July hat-trick for trainer Josh Krispyn as a $1.25 favourite in the Westspeed Platinum Hcp (1600m) at Pinjarra on Wednesday.  “He was very impressive winning his maiden at Bunbury earlier this month,” Krispyn recalled.  “And then he handled a rise in grade off a six-day back-up on another heavy track.

“Today’s win was huge sitting outside the leader and doing all the work in the wet conditions.  He will probably go to the paddock now although I would like win another one for the owners and Siobhan and Micky.”

Asphalt won the first two legs by a combined 8 lengths but only had a long neck to spare from Canny Jack (Galah) and Master Tactician (Rommel) in the third albeit lumping 60kg.  He was bred by Siobhan and Mick Campbell at Bellbridge Park from Fire Side (Hurricane Sky) who had a perfect four-from-four strike-rate at stud.  Her final foal Lendanear (I’m All The Talk) won at Kalgoorlie earlier this month for local trainer Ash Grace.

The Campbells completed a running double on Wednesday with promising Bellbridge Park-bred 2yo Bundaberg (Gingerbread Man) and he arrived hot on the heels of Bellbridge Park-bred 3yo Repossession (Sessions) who won the LR Beaufine Stakes (1000m) at Pinjarra on July 5.
