Peters Investments bred a feature double over the weekend and they don’t come any easier than Cosmic Crusader’s demolition job in the $100,000 TABtouch Stakes (1650m) at Belmont on Saturday.
Cosmic Crusader (5g Maurice – Cosmic Storm by Street Sense) streeted his rivals by eight lengths and was immediately promoted into a $3 favourite for the G1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on November 22.
The lightly-raced sprinter-miler had been sidelined since last October but is unbeaten this campaign. “Last year we knew he had ability but he was bit fine and after every run I wasn’t sure whether we would get another one out of him,” Bob Peters revealed. “But he’s much bigger and stronger now and the time off has been a blessing in disguise.”
Cosmic Crusader (Photo / Western Racepix) a beautifully-bred son of Cosmic Storm who won five black-type races to Group 3 level in the 2016 La Trice Classic (1800m). She has been a regular cover for Arrowfield Stud sire Maurice (Jpn) and their latest foal is a new-season 2yo colt named Cosmic Icon.
Peters Investments bred the second-leg when Sentimental Hero landed the LR Boulder Cup (2100m) on Sunday. It was the first black-type winner this season for Bob and Sandra Peters and he can add another in the LR Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) on October 4.
Sentimental Hero (8g Al Maher – Sentimental Star by More Than Ready) had won a half-dozen races in the cerise and white colours before changing hands at the 2024 Inglis Digital July Sale. Purchased by leading Goldfields owner Andrew Inglis for $50,000, he repaid that with interest winning the LR Alan Scahill Cup (2100m) at Ascot last November.
The $125,000 Boulder Cup is traditionally a reliable guide to the third-leg of the Goldfields feature treble in a fortnight.
“He only has to pull up well to be right for the Kal Cup,” trainer Peter Fernie told the Kalgoorlie Miner Newspaper following a three-length victory over Starry Heights (Star Turn) and Ryewood (Redwood) on Sunday. “I worked him too hard before he finished second in the Coolgardie Cup. I backed off but thought he may have been a bit too fresh when he starting pulling today. But Lucy (Fiore) has beautiful hands and got him to settle.”
Sentimental Hero is one of six winners from Sentimental Star (More Than Ready) who is a half-sister to LR Pinjarra Cup (2400m) winner Star Encounter (Jeune). The latter foaled the Bob and Sandra Peters homebreds Star Exhibit (G2 Perth Cup), Perfect Jewel (G2 WA Guineas) and Royal Star (LR Natasha Stakes).
After foaling Sentimental Hero, Peters Investments sold Sentimental Star to Grant and Alana Williams for $40,000 at the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
They’ve bred Sentimental Belle (Nicconi) who has banked over $200,000 to date in Perth and Sentimental Flame (Kermadec) who was sold to Adelaide where she has also paid her way as well as earning black-type at Morphettville.
Sentimental Star’s Brutal (NZ) filly Ankareeda was placed in 3yo maidens during her initial prep at Northam in June-July for Durrant Racing. Her final foal Sentimental Legend (Brutal) was retained and he was placed in a 2yo trial at Lark Hill in June.
