Colin Webster’s lightly-raced 4yo Pure Obsession took a while to wind up before clicking into overdrive to win the TABtouch Hcp (1400m) at Ascot last Wednesday.
The son of Sessions and stable jockey Troy Turner were a long way off front-runner Drag Machine (Maschino) on the home turn but scouted wide into the straight to finish over the top of the leading division to score by a half-length over Reel Serenity (Highland Reel) and Grandad’s Adiction (God Has Spoken).
Pure Obsession (4g Sessions – Jungfrau Girl by High Chaparral) is managed by Webster with his wife Lynne and is a younger brother to Sessions Peak who won five city races for the stable prior to being embargoed by stewards due to cardiac arrhythmia in May. “He really found the line,” Webster said. “He’s better than Sessions Peak with a better nature and is much easier to get on with. He’s a relaxed horse and will keep improving over further ground.”
Turner was aboard when he won a Pinjarra maiden second time out at $51 in April and is also keen to see him stretch out. “He’s bred to get a mile and appreciated the drop back in class today. He’s been well-placed by Colin and I think he’s in for a nice prep.”
Pure Obsession was facing the starter for just the sixth time at the midweek meeting. He was bred by Dardanup-based Krisman Park owners Phil and Christine Bruce who kept a share and they had also won a Northam maiden with his Webster-trained dam Jungfrau Girl (High Chaparral). Her latest foal is a 2yo first-crop colt by Darling View sire Splintex (Snitzel).
Jungfrau Girl’s half-brother Time Matters (Gilded Time) won a G3 Carlyon Cup at Caulfield and their dam Maat (Sarab) was a half-sister to G1 Melbourne Cup winner Rogan Josh (Old Spice).
