Oakland Park homebred Southern Firetail gave his rivals a start and a beating when facing the starter for the third time in the Keith Mullins & Glenn Money Maiden (1600m) at Pinjarra on Thursday.

It was also a milestone for his sire Maschino.  Southern Firetail is the 100th individual winner by the Alwyn Park stallion and 16% of those winners have gone on to earn black-type.  That’s an amazing achievement considering he sired just 48 foals from his first four books.

The Adam Durrant-trained Southern Firetail was getting out to a mile for the first time and was given time to find his feet from the outside barrier in a 12-horse field by Willie Pike.  Detached from the main pack in the early stages, he improved to be within striking distance at the top of the straight and then mowed down even-money favourite Common Touch (Maschino) to win pulling up by two lengths.

His dam Sisken (Medaglia D’oro) won at Canterbury for Godolphin and she was a $160,000 buy for Oakland Park owners Neville and Susan Duncan at the 2019 Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.  Her earlier foals include the Durrant Racing Belmont winner Silver Eye (Sessions) and the Pearce Racing provincial winner Budgerigar (Epaulette).  Sisken has a filly foal from the first crop of Oakland Park sire Ingratiating (Frosted).

European Stakes winners go right down the page below Sisken’s second-dam Blue Note (Habitat) who was a Group 2 winner of the 1988 Prix Maurice de Gheest (1300m) at Deauville.  She foaled the English Group 1 winners Blue Duster (Cheveley Park Stakes) and Zieten (Middle Park Stakes).
