Lynward Park sire Bondi enhanced interest in his consignment to Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale when Back To Bondi and Ruthless Angel scored eye-catching victories at Ascot last week.
Back To Bondi was facing the starter for just the second time in the Unite Resourcing Maiden (1600m) on Wednesday and was immediately tagged a classic prospect for the G2 WATC Derby (2400m) in April.
Ruthless Angel was responsible for one of the more remarkable 2yo debut wins this season after being tailed off by the best part of 10 lengths in the Glenroy Chaff Plate (1000m) on Saturday. She was detached from the main pack before accelerating off the corner with a turn of foot that had the leaders covered at the furlong.
Back To Bondi (3g Bondi – Black In Time by Blackfriars) was placed behind Morf (Rommel) first-up at Bunbury last month and made the required improvement, albeit with a wayward finish, to defeat front-runner Bradbury’s Moment (Bradbury’s Luck) for Belhus Racing and trainer Trevor Andrews.
“That gave his big group of owners a massive thrill,” Belhus Racing reported on Facebook before posing the question. “Could he be bound for the WA Derby?”
Stable foreman Jason Smith relayed the game plan when interviewed by RWWA anchor Lochie Taylor. “Trevor put him over 1400m first-up at Bunbury instead of 1000m so he could stay with them. He hit the line that day and we stepped him up another 200m this afternoon with the same ride for a better result. He’s still a baby and is progressing the right way towards the autumn.”
Back To Bondi (Photo / Western Racepix) was bred, reared and sold by Lynward Park for $100,000 at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions. “He was a cracking foal and didn’t miss a feed right through to the Yearling Sale,” Lynward Park general manager Troy van Heemst recalled. “He’s faultless, strong and correct with stamina through his dam.”
Lynward Park has catalogued a close relation to Back To Bondi at the 2026 Magic Millions. The Bondi – Matinee Starlet colt (Lot 220) is from an older half-sister to Back To Bondi and is typical of the breed. “There’s a lot to like about him,” van Heemst said. “He’s a robust colt with an imposing attitude and he looks a like a miler.”
Ruthless Angel (2f Bondi – Bella Contessa by Bel Esprit) was backed from $13 into $9.50 off two barrier trials that impressed trainer Dan Morton. “She finished a fair way off them in the first one but the signs were there and the second one was really good. I was very concerned until 400m today and then she got the best part right late. She’s still green and we will probably give her one more run to cement this prep. I think she can develop into a real nice filly.”
Ruthless Angel (Photo / Western Racepix) was also reared at Lynward Park and is a younger half-sister to Bella’s Idol (Vital Equine) who won 8 races up to the 2220m of the LR South-West Cup at Bunbury in 2017. Lynward Park (as agent) is selling their yearling half-brother by Aysar (Lot 131) at the Perth Magic Millions.
Lynward Park has also catalogued three colts by Hunter Valley stallions Yes Yes Yes (Gooree Park), Bivouac (Darley Stud) and Farnan (Kia Ora Stud). “They’re high-end and hard to split,” van Heemst admitted. “The Yes Yes Yes colt (Lot 8) is outstanding. You could saddle him up now and go to the races. He’s fast and is a readymade athlete.”
Darley young gun Bivouac is flying and van Heemst believes his colt from USA-bred black-type mare Plastered (Lot 51) won’t be out of place in the Top 10 on the leaderboard at the Perth Magic Millions. “He’s easy on the eye and hard to fault. I bought the dam on type. The black-type is a bonus.”
Farnan is another top-class sire of the future with four Group winners in his first crop and his colt from Tempting Delight (Lot 100) is a half-brother to Randwick Listed winner Swift Falcon (LR Dulcify Stakes) and Hong Kong winners Bulletproof and Forever Folks.
The Lynward Park consignment will be housed at Barn K and Troy van Heemst can be contacted for further information on 0439 957 111.
