Rangeview Stud bred its second Long Leaf winner this week when promising filly Penny Pincher powered home in the Dunnings Maiden (1000m) at Northam on Thursday.
The Burekup nursery had claimed the first-leg with another member of the fairer sex at Belmont last Saturday courtesy of talented mare Girls Day Out.
Penny Pincher (3f Long Leaf – Hold The Money by Key Business) started an odds-on favourite following a first-up fourth behind Bookends (Nicconi) at Northam last month and the winner had franked that form doubling up at Belmont on Wednesday.
She’s a younger half-sister to Ascot 2yo winner Miss Ivy League (Galah) and was a $26,000 buy out of the Rangeview consignment to the 2024 Perth Magic Millions for Bullsbrook trainer Jim Taylor.
Taylor prepares her for Pat Castledine and her son Stephen and daughter Karen Castledine-Palmer in partnership with Jim’s wife Tina and mother Lois who was farewelled aged 91 by a large congregation at St Brigit’s Church in Midland last month.

They’re just like family and it was Jim who gave an emotional eulogy for Fred Castledine at the Swan Districts Football Club in 2019. Fred, the family patriarch, had won a hat-trick of WAFL flags with Swans in the 1960s and he also owned and trained Meliador (Just Great) to a memorable victory in the 1979 Perth Cup
Penny Pincher is a long way shy of that level but looked a capable type responding to Laqdar Ramoly in the Castledine colours!
She’s a younger half-sister to Ascot 2yo winner Miss Ivy League (Galah) and their unraced 2yo half-brother Secret Money (So Secret) is with south-west trainer Jerry Stelmach. Rangeview’s Rob and Jody Gray sold the final foal from Hold The Money – a Long Leaf weanling filly – to Pinjarra trainer Brett Pope at the 2025 Inglis July Digital Sale.
Rangeview is standing Group 1 racehorse and sire Manhattan Rain (Encosta De Lago) for a $6,600 (inc GST) service fee this year.
