Sunset Session served notice he would be an early winner when runner-up to flying chestnut Castle Road at Pinjarra last August but it’s taken the debutant almost a year to finally salute the judge.
Six starts and another three seconds (at short odds) later, the Forest View Farm-bred galloper was last bar one of a dozen starters coming off the home turn in the Cuprum Distillery Maiden (1000m) at Bunbury on Wednesday.
The Sessions 3yo (Blue & yellow quartered cap / Photo: Western Racepix) looked forlorn before launching down the centre of the track for Clint Johnston-Porter to nail gutsy mare Modern Girl (I’m All The Talk) right on the line. “Good to see Sunset Session break his maiden today,” Gangemi Thoroughbreds posted on Facebook. “He’s been knocking on the door for a while now! Thanks to CJP for a gun ride and congrats to a patient ownership group.”
Forest View Farm’s Ben and Jo Duncan bred and sold him for $30,000 at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions Winter Yearling Sale. Sunset Session is the final foal from Biscay Bonny (Stormy’s Son) and is a half-brother to Stylax (Thorn Dancer) who won a half-dozen city races in Perth from 1200m to 1800m with Fred Kersley.
There are a dozen black-type winners below second-dam Bonny Guest (What A Guest) with the majority bred by Lex and Shirley Piper along with Peters Investments.
Sunset Session was part of a six-pack of winners sired by Oakland Park stallion Sessions last week that included Shout Me (Mount Gambier), Saturday Sesh (Kalgoorlie), Outlaw Music (Derby), Real Deluxe (Morphettville) and Urquharts Bluff (Belmont) who was also bred and sold by Forest View Farm.
Sessions (Lonhro) stands for an $11,000 (inc GST) service fee as does Ingratiating (Frosted) who is lining up for his third book with Oakland Park’s Neville and Susan Duncan in September.
