Single Spice has been an exceptional producer for Yarradale Stud and there’s more to come with a yearling colt and filly foal by Playing God on the ground at Gidgegannup.
In the meantime, her 8th winner arrived at Northam on Thursday when Spicy Thang scored a breakthrough victory in the TABtouch Maiden (1000m). The precocious filly sparked celebrations around Australia with a dominant all-the-way win first-up for trainer Luke Fernie and First Light Racing.
Spicy Thang (3f Toronado – Single Spice by Not A Single Doubt) flew the gates for apprentice Chanel Cooper and never looked troubled to score a stylish win over Celebrity Angel (Universal Ruler) and Hyperreal (Shooting To Win). She clocked 58 seconds flat for 1000m and dashed home the final 600m in 33.86s despite a Soft 5 surface in the Avon Valley.
“This is a really nice filly and that was a pleasing effort,” Cooper said. “She just bowled along and skipped away on the corner before finding again late.”
The chestnut daughter of Toronado (Ire) has been an eye-catcher with her flashy looks from Day 1 and that played out at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions when she made $120,000 from the Yarradale draft to the Swan Valley Sale.
“So pleased for all the great owners in WA that have supported our venture over there and we couldn’t be happier to get the win for all of them,” Victorian-based First Light Racing manager Tyla Becker said.
“She’s been a standout from early days not just because of her rock star looks but also she’s been such a professional filly for the whole team.”

Spicy Thang’s dam Single Spice has been a wonderful producer for Yarradale. She was trained by Simon Miller for Peter Bell and Ray Meadowcroft and was a front-running winner of the LR Supremacy Stakes (1000m) at Ascot in 2011 before being run down by Night War (General Nediym) in that year’s G2 Karrakatta Plate.
Second dam Zafair (Zafonic) was a full-sister to former WA sire Trade Fair (GB) who was represented by numerous black-type gallopers in Perth topped by Trix Of The Trade who won the G1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in 2022.
The best of the 8 winners to date from Single Spice has been 2020 G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) winner Ima Single Man (Gingerbread Man). Her yearling colt by Playing God will be among the Yarradale consignment to the 2026 Perth Magic Millions in February. Nominations close next Friday, September 12.
And Yarradale Stud manager Davy Hanratty reports her Playing God filly at foot is an absolute beauty. Yarradale is standing both Gingerbread Man (Shamardal) and Shooting To Win (Northern Meteor) for $5,500 (inc GST) service fees this season. For all enquiries contact Hanratty on 0429 336 904.
