Peters Investments has a strong connection breeding and buying stock with the very successful (NZ) suffix and its latest addition from across the Tasman is a first-crop colt by Waikato Stud sire Paddington (Siyouni).

Last Thursday, Byerley Bloodstock, acting as agent for Bob and Sandra Peters, purchased the Paddington – Minnaleo (Black Minnaloushe) foal for $190,000 from Seaton Park in the final hour of trade at the NZB Weanling Sale in Karaka.

He’s a half-brother to G1 ATC Randwick Guineas (1600m) winner Lion’s Roar (Contributer) and his dam is a half-sister to G3 NJC Tibbie Stakes (1400m) winner Vaquera (High Chaparral).  Second-dam The Mighty Lions (Grosvenor) won the G1 Avondale Gold Cup (2200m) at her final start for trainer Mike Moroney in December 2004.

Meanwhile, on Thursday afternoon in WA, Peters Investments 3yo homebred filly Acquired Taste (Pierro) came into calculations for TBWA Winner Of The Week with a last-stride victory over Bubbles In Rio (I’m All The Talk) in the Countrywide Insurance Maiden (1100m) at Northam.

But come Sunday, her Micheal Grantham-trained stablemate Western Miss blew away any chance of that coming to fruition with one of the most impressive 3yo maiden victories seen in the south-west this season.

Western Miss was placed at her first two starts at Belmont and Northam earlier this month and was the best of good things beaten in the Avon Valley.  She went out a long odds-on favourite in the Performance Business Sales Maiden (1400m) yesterday and Willie Pike took luck out of the equation at his first raceday ride on the filly.

Western Miss settled outside the speed and then cleared out to score by more than three lengths eased down from Adroit (Astern) with another couple of panels to third-placed Mercury Rising (Maschino).

Peters Investments bred her using 2020 European Horse of the Year Ghaiyyath (Dubawi) in his first southern book at Darley’s Victorian base in Seymour.  That crop has already generated five black-type winners headed by G1 VRC Victoria Derby (2500m) hero Observer.

Western Miss is the first foal of Western Pride (Animal Kingdom) and Peters Investments has been breeding from the family going back three generations to Tilden Park-bred mare Our Millster (Marooned).  Standing head and shoulders above the rest is NZ-bred Western Empire (Iffraaj) who won 13 black-type events in the cerise and white silks to Group 1 level in the 2021 Railway Stakes (1600m).
