James Cummings trained his second Sha Tin winner in as many weeks on Sunday with promising sprinter Speedy Power who has the potential to keep raising the bar in Hong Kong this season.
Speedy Power (4g Farnan – River Goddess by Northern Meteor) was an encouraging third when resuming this season and he went right on with the job for Zac Purton in the Lukfook Jewellery Gold Collection Hcp (1200m)
Sent out a pronounced $1.40 favourite, the Gold Front Thoroughbreds-bred graduate was buried in traffic before making contact with Private Wealth (Capitalist) well into the straight. Once balanced, he finished with purpose covering the final 400m in a quick 22.21s to win by a length.
Gold Front owners Alan and Sue Olive sold Speedy Power for $80,000 through Cannon Hayes Stud (as agent) at the 2024 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. He was pinhooked by Ohaupo-based Woburn Farm and subsequently made $150,000 at the 2024 NZB Ready to Run Sale.
Before shipping off-shore, Speedy Power (pictured prior to the NZ R2R Sale) was runner-up in barriers trials as a July 2yo at Avondale and Augst 3yo at Te Rapa. Both were run on heavy ground and the Avondale hit-out was a black-booker after he blew the start.
His dam River Goddess was a $210,000 buy for the Olives from Amarina Farm at the 2020 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. She won four races up to a mile around the Victorian provincials for Contract Racing’s David Moodie and is a half-sister to G1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia d’Oro.
The Olives sent River Goddess to Farnan when he was standing at Kia Ora Farm and the mare has a 2yo colt by State Of Rest with Archibald Racing and a yearling colt by Hellbent. Farnan also sired the first Hong Kong winner for James Cummings at Sha Tin when Grand Eagle landed the Lek Yuen Hcp (1200m) on October 19.
