Lonsdale Park couple Jim and Trish Anderson will be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky with their sire Maschino in next month’s G2 WATC Derby (2400m).

Maschino (Encosta de Lago) has sired two placegetters in recent editions of the WATC Derby and this year’s challenge comes in the creditable shape of last-start LR John Roberts Stakes (1800m) winner Another Chino.

The Andersons stand Maschino at Alwyn Park Stud and they bred and race Another Chino with a syndicate that includes Elio Galante, Fred Fairthorne and Stan Quinlivan.  His dam Apheta (Galileo) has a perfect record at stud with four winners from as many starters.

Trained by Dan Morton, he has tumbled into a $5 second-favourite for the WATC Derby behind LR Natasha Stakes-winning stablemate She’s Fit (Pride Of Dubai) who heads the market at $4.  “Jarrad (Noske) reckoned had been working really well,” Morton said.  “That was a good guide so I came here confident today.

“The speed was on and that played to his assets.  He was strong through the line and looks a proper stayer in the making.”

Another Chino (Photo / Western Racepix) is the 6th individual stakes-winner by Maschino and he will return for more black-type in the LR Melvista Stakes (2200m) on March 25 in the final dress-rehearsal for the G2 WATC Derby (2400m) on April 8.

Maschino’s second-crop runner Cockney Crew carried the Anderson’s pink and grey shamrock colours in the 2019 WATC Derby and he was hailed a classic winner until nailed in the last stride by Peters Investments homebred galloper Regal Power.

He was bred on the same Maschino – Galileo cross as Another Chino.

The following year Criminal Code gave them another great sight in the WATC Derby when he worked to the front in the straight only to be denied by those same cerise and white silks carried by runaway winner Tuscan Queen.

Lonsdale Park homebred One Cool Gal can continues this year’s winning run with Dan Morton later this week having been nominated for races at Belmont (Wednesday) and Pinjarra (Thursday) following an Ascot victory earlier this month.  She’s a full-sister to talented miler Mr Delegator and their NZ-bred dam Magna Cat (One Cool Cat) has a Maschino yearling filly and a filly foal at Bullsbrook.
