Playin’it Sweet claimed a second LR Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) victory for Playing God yesterday and she’s the 24th black-type winner overall for the Darling View Thoroughbreds Champion.
The Adam Durrant-trained filly shadowed front-runner Our Girl Can Run (Long Leaf) and accelerated to a winning lead at the top of the straight for Lucy Fiore to defeat Talkanco (I’m All The Talk) by a long-head while clocking a quick 1.22.82s.
Playin’it Sweet follows Playing God filly Kay Cee who won the 2019 Burgess Queen before training on land the G1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) a month later at Ascot. She won’t be stretching out that far this prep with her connections not looking any further than the G3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) on Saturday week, November 15.
“She’s a beauty,” Durrant declared. “There’s not much of her but she’s lean, mean and genuine. Credit to the second-horse Talkanco. She’s a top filly and was hunting us down with an extra 3kg.
“It will be an interesting Champion Fillies. Take nothing away from our girl. She was on the bit early and will have to chill out get a mile. She will go down to the beach this week with my partner Nicki who does all the work with her and a big shout out to all the team at home, too.”
Playin’it Sweet (Photo / Western Racepix) is a homebred for Rod and Tania Cosgrove and their daughters Jasmine and Georgia. The Burgess Queen result improved her record to 5 wins in 8 starts for earnings of $478,000 boosted by Westspeed Bonuses of $213,000.
The Cosgroves also bred her older half-brother Fire The Guard (Safeguard) who won the Bullseye Birdies Hcp (1120m) for owner-trainer Rob Gulberti at Geraldton on Tuesday. Their dam Sweet Ora (Oratorio) was pensioned after missing to Playing God last year.
Playing God over Oratorio is a renowned cross with 37 individual winners at an 81% strike-rate. The best of them to date have been Bustler (G1 Railway Stakes) and Ex Sport Man (G2 Karrakatta Plate).
Playing God had opened Ascot’s Melbourne Cup Day meeting with Overdrive winning The Wealth Adviser Beyond Hcp (1000m) for trainer Neville Parnham, his wife Carol and long-time stable client Paul Cooke. They also bred Overdrive. She is a younger full-sister to Lordhelpmerun who was Playing God’s first winner as a sire in the 2018 Karrakatta Plate.
Playing God topped the unreserved dispersal of the Robinson family’s bloodstock portfolio at the inaugural Magic Millions Digital Sale last week. The Playing God yearling colt from Tricky Trix (Universal Ruler) made $35,000 to Michael Lane Racing and TMJ Bloodstock.
