It’s taken time but Mind Field is finally living up to a high-priced assessment by owner-breeder Tony Patrizi when he was a yearling on the Gold Coast.
Mind Field (3g Deep Field – Beautiful Mind by So You Think) was offered by Scone-based Glenbeigh Farm (as agent) at the 2024 Magic Millions Yearling Sale but bidding stalled at $240,000 prompting Patrizi to take him back home to Greenfields Lodge in WA.
The Ryan Hill-trained gelding is within a month of turning four and will go out for another spell after charging home to win the Morley Growers Market Hcp (1400m) at Belmont on Wednesday. He defeated Elegant Ruler (Universal Ruler) and Kings Park (Long Leaf) to make it two wins in three starts this prep after breaking his maiden at Northam.
“Tony and Elizabeth have been very patient,” trainer Ryan Hill revealed. “He didn’t get clear until late winning at Northam and he was unlucky here a fortnight ago.
“Even today he wobbled about after getting to the front. I rang Tony after that last-start loss and said I was just waiting for the penny to drop. He said: ‘You’re the trainer, you make the penny drop!’ He’s a really nice type and it’s great to train a good one for Tony.
“I’ve got plenty of time for this horse and we will tip him out now for next season.”
Winning jockey Brad Parnham believes Mind Field would be unbeaten this time in with any luck. “I decided to stay three-wide and out of trouble on the better part of the track today. He was in a nice rhythm with cover and I decided to pop out early into the straight.
“He worked into it super and was strong through the line. He took the next step today and that will continue when he returns after a break.”
Mind Field is from the penultimate crop of Newgate Farm sire Deep Field (Northern Meteor) who has sired several black-type winners in Perth led by Dig Deep (G2 Karrakatta Plate). He’s the first foal of Beautiful Mind (LR Jungle Dawn Classic) who is a half-sister to Sneaky Five (G3 MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes).
Second-dam Small Minds (Canny Lad) won a G1 South Australian Oaks (2000m) for Patinack Farm and another elite-level filly further down the page is STC Golden Slipper Stakes winner Hartshill (My Heart).
