Refemme No Angel was our Winner Of The Week on the back of a maiden victory at Belmont in December and he returned from a spell to score again as an odds-on favourite in the Drummond Golf Hcp (1200m) on Wednesday.
The Wally Daly homebred skirted the rails behind front-runner Flash Dancer (Hellbent) before taking advantage of the cutaway to score by a length and a half from Cosmic Treat (Universal Ruler). “The field was cluttered at the top end but he had plenty of galloping room on the fence,” co-trainer Sean Casey said at Belmont.
“I thought he would pick them up pretty quick in the straight but he took a while to let down before finding the line. We will get him out to 1400m and he can really go on with it this prep as a handy bread-winner.”
Refemme No Angel is a 3yo son of Darley’s Irish-bred shuttler Harry Angel (Dark Angel) and is the 9th winner from Refemme (Surtee) who won the LR Gimcrack Stakes (1100m) in 2004. The best of her progeny to date has been $455,000 earner Charleton Eddie (Shooting To Win). Her current 2yo One Last Resort (Tassort) was city-placed at his first three starts before finishing down the track in the G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) won by Afireofgidgeecoals (Too Darn Hot) in April.
Their older half-sister Femmette (Murtajill) is the dam of Daly’s homebred 2yo Beatty (Gingerbread Man) who won the G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) and Crystal Slipper Stakes (1100m) earlier this season at Ascot.
Daly and his late brother George bought into the family when purchasing third-dam Guinevere (Agincourt) for $16,000 at an Inglis Sydney Yearling Sale in 1997.
Winning jockey Willie Pike earned his percentage piloting Refemme No Angel for the first time. “He takes you for a ride not the other way around. He’s big and strong and he’s knows it. We didn’t have to rush to utilise the inside lane and there’s more gears once he learns the craft.”
