Mogumber Park stallion Marine One is value plus for broodmare owners this season after his first yearlings averaged over $77,000 on Day 1 of the 2026 Perth Magic Millions.
That was a significant Return On Investment for breeders and it can segue into a windfall for owners and trainers after the Initial Plate (1000m) kick-starts the local 2yo season at Ascot in October.
Marine One (pictured) is a Group 2 winning son of Capitalist (Written Tycoon) who reigns as Australia’s Champion Sire of Winners in 2025-26. He sired 171 individual winners to tip out Zoustar (169) and Toronado (167) in a premiership race that went down to the final day of the season last week
Capitalist made an immediate impact at stud winning the Australian First-Season title for individual winners in 2020-21 and Marine One can follow suit for WA honours this season lining up against fellow freshmen Aysar (Deep Field) and Lightsaber (Zoustar).
Mogumber Park owners Colin Brown and Fiona Lacey stand Marine One alongside Safeguard (Exceed And Excel) who was Champion WA First-Season Sire and 2YO Sire in 2018-19. He added another 2YO Premiership in 2022-23.
“Marine One has been ticking all the boxes so far,” Brown said. “He’s stamping his stock both physically and with his personality and the current service fee presents an opportunity for breeders to book in at the right price before his first-crop are up and running.”
Keysbrook trainer Ryan Hill purchased two Marine One colts at the Magic Millions with the last foal from blue-hen Clarecastle (Tribu) a standout at $120,000. “Getting a toe into that family is pretty exciting,” Hill said. “And this colt just speaks for himself.”
Clarecastle foaled 9 winners from 10 to race including LR Perth Stakes (1100m) speed-machine Castle Road (Safeguard) and the black-type performers More Special, Royal Strata and Specialism.
The second Marine One bought by Hill is the colt from Toyland (I Am Invincible) who is a half-sister to Brisbane black-type performer Stellar Magic (Star Turn). “The Marine Ones really caught our eye and this one was a steal at $30,000.”
Belhus Racing principal Peter Morley syndicated the Marine One – Bound Copy filly that’s been named Queen Marine and she’s with trainer Michael Lane at Boyanup. She’s a younger half-sister to Amelia Park homebred Bassett Hound (Wootton Bassett) who completed a city hat-trick in June.
“Michael really liked her and said he would love to train her,” Morley recalled. “Of course I said yes and being a Westspeed Platinum filly means there’s plenty of bonus money through her two and three-year old seasons.”
Woodbridge Thoroughbreds owner Ian Riley has bred black-type performers Talkanco (I’m All The Talk) and Richanco (Rich Enuff) from his mare Calianco (California Dane) and it wouldn’t surprise to see her Marine One 2yo colt Oneco also make the grade at that level for Pearce Racing.
“Oneco is due back from a break next week,” Riley reported. “He’s a forward colt and all going well the boys can get him to the races before Christmas. On type, you would be surprised if the Marine Ones can’t run. I’m a shareholder and have several more coming through. He upgrades mares and as a group our Marine Ones are their best foals to date”
North Dandalup trainer Michael Grantham and Byerley Bloodstock’s Liam Peters also have a Marine One half-brother to their recent provincial winner Optimus Prime who is by Safeguard (pictured). They were both bred by Mogumber Park and the Marine One colt cost $70,000 at this year’s Perth Magic Millions.
Optimus Prime (2g Safeguard – Go Daisy by Show A Heart) won a Kalgoorlie maiden before doubling up in the TABtouch Hcp (1300m) at Pinjarra last month. “He’s a big and raw with the right attitude and he ran well in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic during his first prep,” Peters said. “He was up against older horses today and didn’t get any favours in running.”
Safeguard continues to produce excellent metrics from limited numbers, striking at 64% career winners-to-runners and 14% Stakes-performers to winners with average earnings per runner of over $90,000.
At the 2026 Perth MM Yearling sale he averaged 10 times his service fee, selling to $85,000. “Safeguard is the ideal stallion choice for both the breed to race and commercial breeder,” Colin Brown said. “He can strengthen up finer mares and add speed to their offspring.”
