Bosun will deservedly start a short-priced favourite for the $100,000 Westspeed Platinum Final (1600m) on September 26 after a dominant victory in Heat 3 of the Spring Series at Belmont.
The 6yo son of Gingerbread Man is a late starter having won a Northam maiden as recently as June and he completed a hat-trick on Saturday with a stunning turn of foot from the tail of a capacity field to defeat Swift Talker (I’m All The Talk) and I’m Nipote (Gingerbread Man).
Bosun’s regular partner Pat Carbery let him amble out from a wide gate and didn’t get busy until tracking Swift Talker into the straight. “I just let him settle under his own steam and I was confident at the 300m,” Carberry reported.
“He had them covered once we balanced up and it was a soft win.”
Trainer Mitch Pateman was more forthright. “That was daylight robbery and there’s a lot better wins in him. It was a month between runs and he’s much better than this grade.
“He was his own worst enemy early on with back luck and injuries. My brother Jason owns him and he’s been doing a great job managing him through all those issues.”

Bosun was bred and sold by Yarradale Stud for $65,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions and he’s a full-brother to Malkar Pindari who won at Ascot (2) and Belmont (2) for trainer Simon Miller. Their dam Storm Sense (Street Sense) is a half-sister to Perth winners Bombs Away (War Chant) and Gunmetal Grey (Bradbury’s Luck).
Yarradale-bred graduate Streak Of God (Playing God) had won the Epilepsy WA Hcp (1400m) earlier at the Belmont meeting and Yarradale sire Shooting To Win also weighed in with a city double on Saturday with Fill A Promise (Morphettville) and Silvanito (Rosehill).
