Sam’s Image went through a half-million dollars in prizemoney with an all-the-way victory in the Dr Sheahan Plate (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
The All American sprinter responded to a positive on-pace ride by leading apprentice Alana Kelly who was aboard for just the second time. They had combined for a first-up fourth down the straight at Flemington last month.
“He ran super after jumping much better today,” Kelly said. “There wasn’t much speed so I went forward and he came back underneath me. He was tracking nicely and then kicked around the corner to hold them off.”
Sam’s Image had beaten Champion sprinter Nature Strip twice as a younger horse but was winless in seven starts last season. He was previously trained by Peter Morgan before transferring to John and Tom Sadler at Pakenham.
“We’re keeping it simple and keeping him happy,” Tom Sadler said. “The owners have been patient and they’re very happy – including my brother Luke.”
Sam’s Image has the runs on the board, however, his career has been compromised by hoof problems. He was bred by Bruce Mathieson and his dam Illusionist (Favorite Trick) descends from celebrated broodmare Oh Calcutta (Streetfighter).
Mathieson won four races at Moonee Valley with Illusionist and has sent the mare to All American three times for three winners. Sam’s Image follows Jill’s Charm and Lady Trickster.
All American gelding Bad Boy Bu looked a nice type winning a Lark Hill trial over 930m on Monday morning. The unraced 3yo is trained by Misty Bazeley and is the final foal of Kalgoorlie winner Ibu (Jeune).
Geisel Park stands All American (Red Ransom) for $5,500 alongside Manhattan Rain (Redoute’s Choice) who covers his initial Westspeed book this year for $8,800. Service fees (inc GST).
