Bullsbrook trainer Jim Taylor started the new season with three winners in as many days last week thanks to Spanish Armada (Spiritjim) and Espresso Time (Long Leaf) at Northam on Thursday before Niccimota (Nicconi) landed her latest Belmont victory first-up on Saturday after being backed from $11 into $7.50.
Espresso Time was bred and sold by Rangeview Stud for $25,000 at the 2024 Perth Magic Millions and he races for a Ladies Syndicate that includes Taylor’s wife Tina and daughter Britt. He follows Rangeview-bred filly Modern Girl (I’m All The Talk) who was our TBWA Winner Of The Week last Monday.
Given time as a two and three year-old, he resumed with a placing behind Super Sentai (Maurice) at Northam last month and stripped fitter for that outing in the Afgri Equipment Maiden (1100m) on Thursday. He won the jump from a wide barrier but was eased back into a crowded field by Chanel Cooper while Kute As Kan Be (Acrobat) took over for Jefferson Tsang.
Espresso Time was forced to travel three and four wide but still had enough in reserve to range up and claim the leader in a head-bobbing finish. “Our beautiful Ladies man ‘Marty’ is a stable favourite and he showed tenacity after doing it tough from the draw,” Taylor posted on Facebook. “Congratulations ladies, especially those celebrating their first winner (hopefully with an espresso martini!).”
Espresso Time is a younger half-brother to four winners by Galah (Bird’s The Word, Chix Chatter, Wanna Cracker, Wise Cracker) and one by Zoustar (Wise Words). He’s the first of four Long Leaf foals from their dam Wise Talk (So Secret) in her final four years at stud. Her 3yo is an unraced filly named Sunnynook with owner Duncan Martin and her 2yo colt is being prepared by Sharon Miller.
Wise Talk’s younger half-sister Mai Aloha (Long Leaf) sent her earnings through $170,000 after winning the Bisley Workwear Hcp (1000m) at Belmont last month.
